Our Board


Gary Pryor

Gary Pryor is an active Member of the Board and served the department for many years. His interest in the fire department stemmed from a fire his neighbor experienced on Christmas Day, in 1980. He was impressed with the fire fighters and their response. He knew that by becoming a member he could give back to his community through service. Not only had the department saved the family’s home but also their Christmas. He knew he wanted to be a part of such an organization. He began his service with the fire department in 1984, achieving the rank of Assistant Chief before retiring as an active fire fighter in July 2000. Gary’s accomplishments within the department included training as a Certified First Responder, Vehicle Extrication and Level III Fire Fighter.

Gary currently works as a District Operations Manager for Hagemeyer North America, a global industrial products distributor. Gary and his wife Mary have four children; Jason and wife Lindsay (Johnson City), Matt, his wife Julie and daughter Kaleigh (Savannah, GA), Laura and husband Josh (Maryville), and Ryan (Maryville). In their spare time Gary and Mary enjoy camping with family and friends.


Ron French

Ronald W. French was elected to the Board of Directors in 1992 and he has served as Vice Chair of the Board (2000-2012) and is currently serving as Treasurer. Mr. French was born in Louisville, KY in 1948. Except for a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, in which he served as an Environmental Science Officer in Fort Rucker, AL, he has been in Tennessee since he was 17 years old. He attended East Tennessee State University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health.

While attending university, he met and married his wife, Gail (McMurray) and they have two children Jackie Stryker and Russell. When Ron left the Army, he worked in the hardware industry as owner/operator of Seymour Hardware, 1985 until 2008. He is currently serving as the District 9, Seat A, Blount County Commissioner and represents the residents of Seymour. He was first elected to County Commissioner in 1998.


Clayton Weaver

Clayton Weaver has served on the board for Seymour Volunteer Fire Department since 2005. He became a member of the Department in 1981 and served in many ranks and in many ways. He was a certified first responder, vehicle extrication and level three fire fighter. He was voted Officer of the year in 1997 and was one of the first members of the Knox County Arson Task Force. He retired from the Department as an Assistant Chief in 2001.

Clayton is the owner of a small construction company that does residential and light commercial remodeling and new residential construction. He has been licensed by the state of Tennessee since 1984 and was a past member of the Greater Knoxville Home Builders Association. He is a graduate of Young High School. He is a life member of the NRA. He is also a member of the Providence Baptist Church. He has been married to his wife Melinda since 1974. They have two children, a daughter Valerie, her husband Rex and their son Kyle. His son Kyle is married to Julie and they have two children, Ashton and Trinity.

Toby Hyke

Toby Hyke

Thomas (Toby) Hyke became involved with the department in 2009 when he became a Board Member. He proudly serves the community and the volunteers with his time and talents. Toby welcomes the opportunity to give back to the community by serving SVFD. In addition to being an active board member for SVFD, for the past 15 years he has been an active Board Member with the Boys and Girls Club.

Toby is the proud owner and operator of Knoxville Radiator & Auto Service, Inc., which has been in business for 34 years. For the past five years, he is a participant of the Seymour Business Association. Toby is an alumnus of U.T. Knoxville. Toby and his wife Kelli have four children: Karlee, Kendall, Keaton and Kamille. He is a member of the New Life Baptist Church.


Joe Fowler

Joe Fowler was born in Knoxville, Tennessee May 29, 1958 and has been a lifelong resident of South Knoxville and Seymour.  He graduated from Doyle High School in 1976 and he graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1980 with a BS in Business Administration.  Joe is married to Audrey (Hurst) and they have four children, Stephanie, Jeremy, Marcus and Madison.  Joe is the General Manager for Ready Mix USA East Tennessee and has been with the company for 33 years.  He currently serves on the Knoxville Advisory Board for the Boys and Girls Club and on the Board of the South Knoxville Foundation.  He is active in various ministries of First Baptist Church Seymour, including the MVP Sports Ministry, missions work and serving as a Trustee.  In his spare time, Joe enjoys biking, hiking, traveling and spending time with his family.

Mark Dixon

Mark Ronald Dixon was raised in Seymour, TN. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1981, and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from The University of Tennessee in 1985. He served as a fire fighter (Lt.) for seven years in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Mark has two children; Cierra Dixon McMahan (Husband Trigg McMahan) and Austin Dixon. With his brother, Randy Dixon, Mark co-owns and operates East TN Wood Products. This is a 50 year old family business that has been located in Seymour for over 30 years. Mark is a board member of K-T Forestry Co. Inc. he is also an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
